Is age a factor in receiving a dental implant?

While there are many factors that go into determining if you are a good candidate for dental implants, age is certainly not one of them. Almost anyone can benefit from dental implants, no matter how young or old. As long as you have enough bone mass to support the implant and are in relatively good health, you will likely be considered a good candidate for a dental implant.

Bone Mass Issues

If you don't have enough bone mass, this doesn't rule you out! Bone grafting can be performed to increase the mass of your jawbone so it can properly support and sustain a surgical dental implant. West Allis dentist Dr. Monteagudo will let you know if bone grafting is necessary.

Factors Important to Success of Dental Implants

While age isn't important to the success of a dental implant, some other factors are. If you are a smoker, the risk of implant failure is greatly increased. If you can quit smoking before your implant surgery, you will increase the odds of a successful implant. Overall health can also be a factor. The bone must heal and osseointegrate, or fuse, with the implant in order to secure it in the jaw. Any medical condition that would reduce your body's ability to heal may decrease your chances of a successful dental implant.
