Does insurance pay for dental implants?

In general, the cost of surgical placement of dental implants is not covered by dental insurance. As with lots of other procedures, coverage varies widely from carrier to carrier. Some insurance plans will pay for implants, some won’t, and yet others pay only a portion of the costs.

In many cases, though, your insurance may help pay for the restorative portion of teeth that are placed on the dental implants like crowns, bridges, or dentures. The good news is that today many more insurance companies are covering the cost of dental implants than they did ten years ago.

However, you may be surprised to know that there are cases where the best coverage can be obtained through your medical insurance. If you are missing all or most of your teeth, the implant procedure may be considered jaw reconstruction and restoration of normal chewing function.
